Teenagers Thrive, Thiem Survives, Trevisan is on Top of the World - Day 8 Recap and Results
I am not surprised Jannik Sinner made it this far at this year's French Open. What I AM surprised about, is that an Italian woman will be joining him in the quarterfinals. The qualifier, Martina Trevisan, took out 5 seeded Kiki Bertens in straight sets. Just on the cusp of being Top 150 coming into this tournament, the Italian will make her Top 100 debut after making the quarter-finals. On her way to this spot, she beat: Giorgi, Gauff, Sakkari, and now Bertens (only dropping one set in total).
Sticking to the women's side of the draw, we have to ask the question: Is this Svitolina's best chance to get to a grand slam final? She made two semi final appearances last year at Wimbledon and US Open but has yet to crack that final appearance. In my mind, she was one of the next big young players to win a grand slam. ESPECIALLY when Serena took her leave of absence to give birth to her child. Now at 26, just one year younger than Thiem when he won his grand slam title. But... she has Podoroska next, Swiatek or Trevisan in the semi finals and could possibly face Kvitova/Kenin/Jabeur in the finals. Svitolina is the only one here that has won a big clay title (Rome TWICE). If I was to push for anyone to use their experience to push them forward towards the finals, it would be Elina.
Last, but certainly not least, the Gaston versus Thiem match was one to remember. Hugo Gaston, the 2018 Junior Australian Open champion, had an unreal week in his home country of France. Beating the likes of Nishioka, Wawrinka, and taking this years US Open champion to five sets is one memory that Gaston will never forget. Thiem's experience was too much for the young Frenchman and was able to hold on to move one step closer to his first French Open title. Thiem was so impressed by the kid, he even talked about his drop shots during his post match interview.
