The Miami Open Finals: What'd you expect?
Two things: One, I love that Ash Barty won the title. She deserved it and played out of her mind. I want to see her play like this all the time. The fact that she beat Pliskova proved a point. You have to bend your legs in order to win a tournament (yes, I am looking at you, Karolina). And two, Federer beating Isner so easily is just routine at this point. Isner had an unbelievable tournament and deserved to be in the final to defend his title. But when he plays Federer, his serve isn't going to help.
Men's Final - Federer Won... Shocker After watching the first set being blown out 6-1, I really did not expect much after that. I am currently in Charleston for the Volvo Car Open and I after coming into the media room and seeing the first set score, I just shrugged and went back to my desk. Just looking at the statistics from the match, Federer won 100% of his first serve points and 80% of his second serves without even facing one break point... Isner has broken four separate occasions after having one of the most consistent serves throughout the tournament.
I was happy to see Isner make another incredible run at the Miami Open. It would have been a great storyline to write "Same story, different place" if Isner pulled off the upset. Isner did have to battle through some late injuries in the second set but powered through to the best of his ability. Federer now leads the race to London ATP Finals, at 37 years and 7 months old... Wow.
It's a Barty Party AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, OI OI OI!! I couldn't be happier for Ash Barty. A start in the making for a long time coming now. She defeated Karolina Pliskova in the finals for her first ever WTA Premier Mandatory title. This marks the biggest win in her career and hopefully, no one else is surprised by her win. I think Barty's playing style is something that the WTA has been looking for. She plays smart, not hard. With her aggressive slice and variety of shots, she is able to command the court against her opponents.
Unfortunately, Barty pulled out of the Volvo Car Open (where I currently am) which is disappointing but never the less, we look forward to seeing what she can do this clay season and for the rest of the 2019 season!
